*A wave of young Black conservatives is reshaping Republican outreach, leveraging social media influence and cultural relevance to expand support for Donald Trump’s political agenda.
As USA Today reports, leading this charge is CJ Pearson, a 23-year-old who first gained prominence at age 13 after publicly criticizing President Barack Obama for inviting Ahmed Mohamed—a Texas teenager arrested for bringing a homemade clock to school that was mistaken for a bomb—to the White House.
On a recent episode of his podcast “Family Matters,” Pearson made provocative commentary about Black liberals, questioning their political authenticity. “Have y’all ever noticed that Black people on the left love to hate white people in the streets but love them in the sheets?” he asked, citing the interracial marriages of Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar.
Pearson and similar influencers represent a generational shift from traditional Black Republican figures such as Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice. Political strategist Janiyah Thomas, who served as Black media director during Trump’s 2024 campaign, noted the stylistic differences. “We’re more raw and unfiltered, especially in today’s time,” Thomas says. “I feel like the older generation of Black conservatives were more buttoned up and stiff.”
Trump’s background as a reality TV personality aligns with these digital-native activists who command substantial online followings. The administration has embraced hip-hop culture in its messaging, and Trump has pardoned rapper NBA Youngboy and former Chicago gang leader Larry Hoover since taking office.
Despite online momentum, electoral success remains elusive for Black Republican candidates. Herschel Walker and Mark Robinson both lost statewide races amid controversy, though Rep. Byron Donalds is emerging as a frontrunner for Florida governor with Trump’s backing. “I know Byron well, have seen him tested at the highest and most difficult levels, and he is a TOTAL WINNER,” Trump said in a Feb. 20 post on Truth Social.
Pew Research found Trump captured 15% of Black voters in 2024, up from 8% in 2020, though recent data shows declining support. “Right now, my priority is simply doing all I can to win young people over to our side and help us win the culture war because politics is downstream from culture,” Pearson told USA TODAY.
