“Due to a serious case of sepsis, Billy Porter must also withdraw from the production,” a statement on the show’s social media announced on September 7. Sepsis is a severe infection that can lead to organ failure, tissue damage, or even death. Us Magazine reports that Porter’s doctors remain optimistic about his recovery, advising a restful schedule.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have made the painful decision to end our Broadway run on September 21,” producer Adam Speers told Entertainment Weekly. He praised Porter’s contribution, stating, “Billy was an extraordinary Emcee, bringing his signature passion and remarkable talent.” Speers expressed enthusiasm for future collaborations with the star.

Following Porter’s departure, the Emcee role will be shared by Marty Lauter and David Merino for the remaining performances, with specific dates to be shared on the show’s social media. “On behalf of all the producers, we’re so honored to have been able to bring this version of John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff‘s important masterpiece, Cabaret, to New York,” Speers added, reflecting on the show’s impactful run.
Porter’s return to Broadway marked a homecoming for the seasoned performer, who last graced the stage nine years ago. “The last time I was on Broadway was about nine years ago, and I feel comfort. I feel like I’m home,” he shared on the “Today” show in July.
Having previously played the Emcee in the West End production, Porter described slipping back into the role as “getting on a bike,” adding, “My mind kind of came back. It’s still there. It was not deleted from the files, yet.”
