*A new charitable effort is taking shape in the wake of Ashlee Jenae’s death, as her fiancé, Joe McCann, moves to establish a foundation in her memory focused on mental health support and suicide prevention.
McCann says he has begun the process of forming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping people struggling with thoughts of self-harm, TMZ reports. The initiative, he explained, grew out of personal grief following Ashlee’s death during an April vacation in Zanzibar, where the couple had been traveling to celebrate their engagement.
Ashlee Jenae, whose legal name was Ashly Robinson, died on April 9 while on the trip. Local authorities later ruled her death a suicide, stating that she died from cerebral hypoxia caused by strangulation after she was found in a wardrobe area at a luxury resort villa. Investigators said evidence collected during the case, including data recovered from her phone, supported the conclusion. Police also cleared McCann of any involvement.

McCann described the emotional impact of the official findings, telling TMZ, “When the official findings were announced, I felt a deep sense of renewed pain, but also purpose.” He added that the experience pushed him to channel his grief into action through the planned foundation.
“Ashly’s story needs to be told so we can honor and cherish what she brought to this world. Her death will not be in vain, and her legacy will be preserved,” he said.
He also expressed personal regret over what he described as her emotional suffering. “I wish I could have brought her over from the darkness into the light.”
McCann added that he wants to ensure others facing similar struggles receive support before reaching a crisis point. Read his full statement online outlining his plans HERE.
While the official investigation has concluded, Ashlee’s family continues to dispute the ruling and has called for further clarity. They raised concerns about aspects of the investigation, including the timeline of communication and evidence review.
