*Amanda Gorman has paid tribute to Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen who was fatally shot by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis. Sharing a poem titled “For Alex Jeffrey Pretti” on Instagram, Gorman framed his death as both a betrayal and an execution, honoring his life and the compassion he showed for others.
Pretti was killed on Nicollet Avenue after stepping in to help a woman who was being shoved by a federal officer. Though officials initially claimed he attempted to attack law enforcement, video evidence showed that his weapon was holstered and that he was unarmed during the incident. Multiple officers were involved in the scuffle before Pretti was fatally shot.
In her poem, Gorman wrote of Pretti as a “bright-fled angel,” emphasizing that his spirit and acts of goodness will endure despite his untimely death. This tribute follows her earlier poem honoring Renee Nicole Good, another U.S. citizen killed by federal officers in Minneapolis, in which Gorman condemned systemic violence and discrimination.

Alex’s sister, Micayla Pretti, described her brother, who was an ICU nurse, as kind, intelligent, and deeply passionate. She noted that he devoted his life to helping others and that even in his final moments, he was acting to protect someone else.
“All Alex ever wanted was to help someone—anyone. Even in his very last moments on this earth, he was simply trying to do just that,” Micayla said in a statement.
“Alex was kind, generous, and had a way of lighting up every room he walked into. He was incredibly intelligent and deeply passionate, and he made people feel safe,” she added. “But most importantly, he was my brother. I had the privilege of being his little sister for 32 years. I will never be able to hug him, laugh with him, or cry to him again because of those thugs—and that is a pain no words can fully capture.”
Through her tribute, Gorman amplifies Pretti’s legacy as a caregiver and a protector, ensuring his commitment to helping others is remembered beyond the tragedy of his death. Read her poem via the Instagram post below.
