*A&E is set to debut “Family Lockup,” a ten-episode non-fiction series exploring a bold rehabilitation program where estranged family members join incarcerated loved ones inside prison to repair fractured relationships. The series premieres Thursday, August 21, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
Produced by Lucky 8, known for “60 Days In,” and Monami Productions, the team behind “Hip Hop Homicides,” the show documents families who spend two nights behind bars at Hampden County Jail in Massachusetts. Per the news release, this initiative, led by Sheriff Nick Cocchi, aims to redefine correctional rehabilitation by underscoring the role of family support in an inmate’s reentry into society. Ten families will participate in the journey, confronting unresolved conflicts while navigating the realities of incarceration.
Psychologist Dr. Jeff Gardere facilitates emotionally charged sessions between inmates and their relatives, pushing both sides to address long-standing issues and develop empathy. Family members must grapple with whether they can remain in each other’s lives or walk away for good. For some, the process could pave the way for reunion and healing; for others, reintegration may still be a solitary road.
“So much of a person’s ability to succeed after incarceration comes down to whether they have the support of their family and loved ones,” Sheriff Cocchi said. “When we can help rebuild trust and strengthen these bonds inside the jail, we give people a real chance to stay out for good. This series shows that rehabilitation is not just about the individual – it’s about healing families and communities too.”

In addition to on-air broadcasts, “Family Lockup” will be available on demand and for streaming through the A&E App and aetv.com. Executive producers for Lucky 8 include Greg Henry, Kim Woodard, Isaac Holub, George Kralovansky, and Miranda Johnson-Smith. Mona Scott-Young, Stephanie R. Gayle, and Michael Lang executive produce for Monami Productions, with Elaine Frontain Bryant, Shelly Tatro, and Brad Abramson overseeing for A&E. A+E Global Media holds exclusive worldwide distribution rights in all media formats.
The program builds on Hampden County Sheriff’s Office’s long-standing reputation for innovative correctional reform. Under Sheriff Cocchi’s leadership, the office has implemented initiatives like the All-Inclusive Support Services program, which focuses on education, job training, addiction treatment, and family engagement, helping maintain one of the lowest recidivism rates in the nation.
