*BET+ is bringing back a fan-favorite character with a fresh twist, greenlighting “Varnell Hill,” a new workplace comedy series inspired by Tommy Davidson’s iconic guest role from the 1990s sitcom Martin.
The streaming service has given the show a straight-to-series order, reuniting Davidson with “Martin” star and comedy legend Martin Lawrence, who co-creates and executive produces the new show, per the news release. First introduced in “Martin” as the flashy, smooth-talking talk show host Varnell Hill, Davidson’s character quickly became a cult favorite. Now, after more than 30 years, Varnell is stepping into the spotlight in a series all his own.
Set behind the scenes of a long-running late-night talk show, “The Varnell Hill Show,” the new series blends satire, workplace comedy, and showbiz antics. It will explore Varnell’s quest to stay relevant in a fast-changing media landscape, all while navigating the high-stakes world of network politics, creative egos, and chaotic production schedules. Audiences can expect a vibrant mix of new characters, celebrity guest stars, and a unique style that includes cutaways and fourth-wall-breaking moments.
“Did you miss me? Well, now you don’t have to!” Davidson shared. “I’m excited and honored to be a part of such a creative project with the brilliant mind of Martin Lawrence, over 30 years in the making. Fans have requested it and now it’s coming to BET+!”
Alongside Davidson and Lawrence, “Varnell Hill” boasts an impressive team of creative minds. Longtime Martin collaborator Bentley Kyle Evans will serve as showrunner, writer, and director, as well as executive producer. The executive producing team also includes Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, Andy Horne, Stacy Lyles, Robert Lawrence, and Rae Proctor, with Rose Catherine Pinkney and Jason Harvey executive producing for BET+.
