*“The Couple Next Door” is the new STARZ psychological drama that peels back the glossy surface of suburban life to reveal the turmoil beneath.
The six-part series stars Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away with Murder), Sam Heughan (Outlander), and Jessica De Gouw (Arrow). It explores the dangerous complexities of desire, status, and secrets that threaten to unravel two seemingly perfect couples. In an exclusive interview with EUR, Heughan and De Gouw shed light on their characters, Danny and Becka Whitwell, and the intense dynamics of the show. Reflecting on the Whitwells’ relationship, De Gouw explained it this way:
“They’re a remarkable couple… this really is an epic love story with a rich history. But we meet them at a point of crisis. The life they were living has crumbled away.”
The arrival of their new neighbors, Evie (Tomlinson) and Pete (Enoch), a couple eager to settle into the suburban dream, sets the stage for that crisis to become a changing point for everyone involved.

The interactions between the two couples become increasingly complicated, eventually leading to explosive revelations.
“In this sort of idyllic suburban world, actually, everyone is pretty isolated, pretty lonely, and they’re all dealing with crises in their relationships. On the surface, it all looks pretty… but lots of truths are not told, lots of secrets are held back,” Heughan added.
The chemistry between the two couples is a key element in the series. Both Heughan and De Gouw emphasized how natural connecting with their scene partners was.
“It came very easily for us as a group… we all approach work with enthusiasm and curiosity. The chemistry wasn’t hard; keeping straight faces during scenes was harder,” De Gouw noted.

“How’s it not easy to fall in love or have chemistry with this lady? She’s such a bright intellect and an incredible talent” Heughan praised De Gouw.
The series also delves into the duality of its characters, presenting layered and evolving portraits of people who are not what they seem.
“You meet these people, and you make assumptions… but their authentic selves or the journey they’re on is very different from what we first see.” Heughan agreed, adding, “That’s what’s exciting as an actor—digging into those contradictions and nuances,” De Gouw noted.
For Heughan, the series’ layered storytelling and its exploration of human desires set it apart: “It’s pretty explosive,” he teased, “and certainly plays out over six episodes in ways you won’t expect.”
“The Couple Next Door” airs on STARZ on Fridays and is available on the app.
