*The fatal stabbing of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte light rail train has ignited calls for judicial reform. Republican Rep. Tim Moore labeled the attack “preventable” on X, stating, “There must be accountability. North Carolinians deserve better.”
As News Nation reports, ten other North Carolina House Republicans signed a letter demanding formal proceedings to remove Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes. They called her decision to release suspect Decarlos Brown Jr. “reckless,” citing a “willful and persistent failure” in her duties.
Surveillance footage from the Charlotte Area Transit System captured the random attack, showing Zarutska being stabbed multiple times from behind. The graphic video, widely shared online, prompted her family to request that the public and media refrain from reposting it to respect their grief. An online obituary described Zarutska, who fled Ukraine in 2022, as a “gifted and passionate artist” who was “happiest when surrounded by family and loved ones.”

Brown, 34, faces first-degree murder charges for the killing. His documented history of mental health issues, homelessness, and prior convictions, including armed robbery and an eight-year prison term, has fueled criticism of the judicial system. Reports indicate Brown was arrested and released 14 times before the attack. Republican Rep. Brenden Jones blamed “decades of Democrat DAs and Sheriffs putting their woke agendas above public safety.”
Charlotte Mayor Lyles called the incident “a tragic failure by the courts and magistrates” and promised more police on public transit. She emphasized addressing “repeated offenders who do not face consequences for their actions and those who cannot get treatment for their mental illness and are allowed to be on the streets.”
Governor Josh Stein, shocked by the footage, urged more law enforcement funding, stating, “We need more cops on the beat to keep people safe.” President Donald Trump called the killing “horrible” on Truth Social, writing, “I have seen the horrific video of a beautiful, young Ukrainian refugee, who came to America to escape the vicious War in Ukraine, and was innocently riding the Metro in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she was brutally ambushed by a mentally deranged lunatic.”
Trump questioned, “What the hell was he doing riding the train, and walking the streets? Criminals like this need to be LOCKED UP.”
Florida Congressman Randy Fine plans to “introduce legislation to hold judges accountable when violent repeat offenders they release commit new crimes,” adding, “Those 12+ judges that released Decarlos Brown Jr should have their day in court too.”
