*Kid Cudi opened up about his challenging experience testifying against Sean “Diddy” Combs in a high-profile sex trafficking trial.
The Grammy-winning rapper and actor took the stand on May 22 in a Lower Manhattan federal courthouse, detailing a 2011 home invasion and a 2012 car explosion he believes were fueled by Combs’ jealousy over Cudi’s brief relationship with Cassie Ventura. “He was standing at the window with his hands behind his back like a Marvel supervillain,” Cudi recalled of a tense meeting with Combs after the fire.
In a candid interview on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Cudi expressed his discomfort with the legal process, stating, “I hated every minute of it. I did not want to do it.” Initially resistant, he declined prosecutors’ requests until a subpoena forced his participation. “They asked again. I said no. Then I got subpoenaed, and I was like, ‘Fuck! Shit! No!’” he said.
Cudi’s testimony centered on supporting Ventura, Combs’ ex-girlfriend, and the trial’s key witness. “Cassie is my friend. I love her, and I want to see her do well,” he said, reflecting on her marriage and children as signs of her moving forward from a “nightmare.” Ventura had testified that Combs threatened to blow up Cudi’s Porsche, which was destroyed by a Molotov cocktail in 2012, though no direct evidence tied Combs to the act.
On “CBS Mornings,” Cudi addressed the mixed public reaction, noting, “The backlash was swift. I had a lot of people that supported me, but there were a few that had some opinions about it.”
The events of 2011 and 2012 left him shaken, with Cudi admitting, “It was crazy, man. I had a hard time understanding if it was reality. I was like, ‘Am I in a movie? What the fuck is going on?’”
The trial, which ended with Combs acquitted of racketeering and sex trafficking but convicted on two prostitution-related charges, marked a pivotal moment for Cudi. Post-testimony, he shared on social media, “This was a stressful situation. I’m glad it’s behind me,” signaling relief as he continues to prioritize his private life in Los Angeles.—
