*In what can only be described as the ultimate fashion showdown, Jimmy Fallon took to his Tonight Show stage and ruthlessly mocked First Lady Melania Trump’s hat choice during the inauguration, comparing it to nothing less than a costume straight out of a McDonald’s-themed nightmare.
As he donned his own floppy wide-brimmed black hat with a witty white stripe, Fallon quipped, “After this, we’re going to play ‘Who Wore It Best? Me, Melania, or the Hamburglar?’” Talk about setting the stage for a comedic roast!
The barrel of laughs didn’t stop there. Fallon continued to deliver one-liners that made sure everyone got the joke, stating, “It’s Melania’s very own border wall,” as he showcased a clip of the President himself struggling to break through the hat’s massive brim to land a sweet kiss on Melania’s cheek. You know it’s bad news when even a presidential smooch becomes a comedy sketch.
Let’s address the elephant—or the hat— in the room. The designer of Melania’s headpiece claimed it was intended to convey a right-wing political message; however, fashion critics have torn it to shreds. Former Harrods fashion editor Tiffanie Starke didn’t hold back, labeling it at best a “sartorial prop that sat somewhere between Gestapo uniform and Al Capone cosplay.” Ouch! If Melania was aiming for a statement, she certainly delivered…just not the one anyone had in mind.

Fallon might be cracking jokes, but let’s not forget that Melania’s wardrobe choices aren’t just for laughs—they’re serious business. Take, for example, Bernard Arnault, the French billionaire CEO of LVMH, who was perched behind former President Bill Clinton during the inauguration like a hawk watching over his luxury empire.
Arnault certainly has a vested interest in Melania’s outfits, especially since her stylist, Hervé Pierre, has been opting for smaller, boutique finds over LVMH’s Dior. Sorry, Arnault—when it comes to fashion diplomacy, it seems Melania’s leaning toward the little guys.
Remember the infamous Zara jacket emblazoned with “I really don’t care” that Melania donned on a trip to a children’s refugee camp? Yep, that’s still weighing heavy on the collective consciousness.
By shunning the luxury brands associated with Arnault’s empire, Melania is sending ripples through the fashion world and possibly posing a threat to Arnault’s bottom line amidst Trump’s looming tariff threats.
So here’s where the conundrum lies: Is Melania making a political statement through her fashion faux pas? Is she embracing the notion that in a world of high fashion, timing is everything? One thing’s for certain—the fashion world is watching, and so is Jimmy Fallon, and it’s going to be a long inauguration season if we have to keep talking about that hat.
