The initiative, announced on January 20, is a collaboration with GoFundMe and the Black Music Action Coalition.
“This is Flavor Flav in the building. It’s been inspiring to me, seeing a lot people coming together right now, lifting each other’s spirits,” the Public Enemy member announced Monday (Jan. 20), in a clip posted on Instagram.
“There’s not enough being done for the Black families and the communities. Come on, y’all. Let’s make L.A. strong, baby. Let’s help those in need,” the hip-hop star added.
We reported earlier that residents and supporters are turning to social media to share the devastating impact of the uncontrolled fire, which ravaged parts of Los Angeles County, including Pasadena and the Los Angeles National Forest. The multiple wildfires, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, have left many homeless and in desperate need of help.
The Black community in Altadena, Los Angeles County, for example, has been devastated by the Eaton Fire, which scorched over 10,600 acres and claimed over 20 lives. To support those affected, a GoFundMe campaign titled “LA Fires: The Impacted Black Community Urgently Needs Help!” was launched in partnership with major African American law firms and local organizations, with 100% of funds going directly to those in need.
Flava Flav noted the disparity between the help provided to members of the Black community.
“It’s been inspiring to see so many people come together as one to lift each other up, and I just want to highlight one aspect of the larger LA community in dire need,” Flav wrote in the post’s caption.
“Not enough is being done for the black families and community in the aftermath of the California fires. I’ve partnered up with GoFundMe and the Black Music Action Coalition to create ONE main GoFundMe campaign to immediately help those in need.”
He also called for fellow artists and entertainers to join him in contributing to the fund.
“I urge not only black artists and musicians and creators, but EVERYONE to come together and continue to help those in still in desperate need,” he added.
