*Deitrick Haddon is speaking out after rapper GloRilla’s surprise win at the 2025 BET Awards, where she earned the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award for her song “Rain Down On Me,” a track featuring Kirk Franklin and Maverick City Music.
Haddon took to Instagram with a candid, three-minute video, expressing concern over the direction gospel music is heading, Ice Cream Convos reports.
“The gospel music industry needs an overhaul period after last night’s show. It’s an indicator that we just need a complete reset. Like, like what are we doing?” Haddon said.
Though GloRilla’s collaboration features prominent gospel artists, Haddon wondered if the song fits in a category meant to celebrate gospel talent. He noted that the problem lies not with the artist but with the system that repeatedly permits such choices.
“Are we allowing this to happen over and over again and wonder why the gospel music industry is dying? Come on, man,” he added.

Haddon also voiced frustration over a lack of diversity in award recognition, calling out an industry that often celebrates the same names year after year.
“We are tired—nobody will say this, but I will—of seeing the same people being celebrated year after year, like there is nobody else in gospel music,” Haddon said.
He also called for a new movement or platform to promote gospel music, untainted by industry politics and favoritism.
“Let’s start something where we can come together and have someone advocating for the genre… but to elevate the gospel music genre as a whole—that’s what I feel,” he concluded.
