*President Donald Trump’s effort to rid the US of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies has impacted livelihoods of many businesses. Yet, Costco stands firm in maintaining the thing that brought its longstanding success…for now.
During a recent shareholder meeting, Costco’s board of directors gave a dominant thumbs down to the National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPR)’s bid to investigate risks the company’s business posed to its bottom line, according to the New York Post.
As an opponent to the NCPR’s proposal, Costco Chairman Hamilton “Tony” James reemphasized the wholesale grocer’s formula to its longstanding success and its intent to maintain that success with the very things the NCPR is against.
“We owe our success to the more than 300,000 employees who serve our members every day,” James stated at the meeting, which took place on Jan. 31. “It is important that they all feel included and appreciated and that they transmit these values to our customers.”
Although the NCPR’s proposal was not a hit with 98 percent of Costco’s shareholders, Peck stated that setbacks like this are normal, with Costco eventually yielding to incorporate Trump’s anti-DEI stance into its culture.

“A board opposing a shareholder proposal is a typical and expected part of the shareholder proposal process – nearly every shareholder proposal, regardless of topic, is opposed by every board,” he told Fox News Digital.
“Just months before Boeing dropped DEI, they opposed our shareholder proposal requesting an audit of their DEI efforts. So Costco doubling-down on DEI in the proxy statement is not as meaningful as has been made out to be.”
“There’s still a decent chance that Costco drops DEI by the end of the year,” Peck added. For him, it’s simply a matter of when as he predicts Costco follow Walmart, McDonald’s, Harley-Davidson and other companies that rolled back or abandoned DEI policies after Trump’s historic return to the White House after defeating Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
To many, DEI was a vehicle used to balance the playing field with taking racial or gender considerations into hiring practice and workplace diversity trainings. In his recent Davos speech, Trump, who issued executive orders banning DEI in the federal government, continued his criticism of DEI, labeling it as “discriminatory” and “absolute nonsense.”
