*A recent study has linked the popular bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich to a 13% increased risk of dementia.
Dementia is “a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life,” per the Alzheimer’s Association.
Researchers from Harvard analyzed data from studies dating back to 1976, involving around 170,000 healthcare professionals. They found that regular consumption of processed meats like bacon, sausage, and hot dogs was associated with cognitive decline, New York Post repost.
According to the American Psychological Association, cognitive function is defined as “the performance of the mental processes of perception, learning, memory, understanding, awareness, reasoning, judgment, intuition, and language.”
The study, published in Neurology, suggests that replacing processed meats with fish, such as salmon, can reduce this risk by up to 28%. However, experts caution against overconsuming smoked salmon due to its high sodium content. This news adds to the growing health concerns surrounding processed meats.
“Replacing one serving per day of processed red meat with a serving of fish was associated with a 28% lower risk of dementia and 51% lower risk of subjective cognitive decline,” Eating Well reported.
