Q: What was your favorite fight scene from Love Hurts?
KHQ: [The one in the kitchen with the amethyst] because it’s very creative. I love what our action team put together. That fight, it’s about Marvin Gable holding on to that certificate that was given to him by his boss, who was played by Sean Astin. He is trying to hold on to his current life while he’s being dragged back to his past life. And that fight [had] a cookie cutter as a weapon…So smart! It was also the most challenging fight to do because it was the first fight we did. I trained with our guys, and it was a lot of fun to do, but I also ended up getting a lot of bruises and aches and pains.
Q: How did you change your directing style between directing Ariana and Ke?
JE: As a first-time director, I was still learning the processes. They’re both Oscar winners, so it’s not like I could teach them anything. With Ariana, I was like let me see what you got. What are your ideas? Then she’d take ownership and give me so many options. Then I’d see if it works for the scene. Or the rest of the movie. I like a collaborative environment. I like to see what the actors will do with [the scene]. Then it’s a matter of me saying, ‘maybe we tone it down, we tone it up, those things. And with Key, it’s… And again, Key, Key was on from the very beginning, so we wrote a lot of stuff going for Key’s personality.
LoveHurts opens only in theaters on February 7th.
