*Earlier this month on December 4, the Paley Center for Media celebrated movie mogul Tyler Perry at a star-studded event held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.
The gala featured notable attendees, including Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle (the Duchess of Sussex), and Kerry Washington.
During the evening, Winfrey and Washington expressed their heartfelt admiration for Perry, highlighting the profound impact he has had on their lives and the lives of his fans. Both women were visibly emotional as they shared stories of love and respect for the filmmaker. Washington recounted a pivotal moment in her career when she contemplated quitting acting; however, an opportunity to work with Perry inspired her to continue pursuing her passion.
In his acceptance speech, Perry opened up about his tumultuous childhood, revealing the abuse he experienced, including being raped by an adult woman. He also reflected on the trauma of witnessing his father’s continual violence against his mother.
While on the red carpet, an Access Hollywood reporter showed Perry a childhood photograph taken when he was five years old. The image stirred painful emotions, as he shared that his mother had captured the moment. He revealed that she passed away fifteen years ago, nearly to date, and the trauma remains with him daily. At times, he finds solace by retreating to the mountains to pray, seeking peace amidst the turmoil.
The event also saw several other high-profile guests, including Chante Moore, Debbie Allen, Norm Nixon, James Pickens Jr., Nicole Avant, Ted Sarandos of Netflix, Tika Sumpter, Cory Hardrict, Yvette Nicole Brown, Essence Atkins, Florence LaRue, Cookie Johnson, LaTanya Jackson, Lynn Whitfield, and Tina Knowles.
Paley President Maureen J. Reidy was also in attendance, further underscoring the significance of the occasion.
