*One of the most highly anticipated books of the holiday season is set to drop November 26th from Harper Collins Amistad. “AfroCentric Style: A Celebration of Blackness & Identity in Pop Culture,” written by the multi-hyphenate author, ghostwriter, screenwriter, and TV/Film producer, Shirley Neal.
The author’s “AfroCentric Style” links the vibrancy of Black identity and expression with mainstream popular culture from the past to the present.
Filled with more than 200 color and black-and-white photos that highlight the top memes, movements, and milestone moments permeating today’s social media—from Beyoncé to the Black Panthers, Serena Williams to Kamala Harris—Neal explores how pop culture serves as a lens through which Black identity is expressed and understood.
The book is the first solo literary project for Neal, who has ghostwritten dozens of titles for “…authors who don’t have the time to complete their books,” she states. After collaborating on “The Business of Beauty: The Guaranteed Strategy to Building, Running, and Growing a Successful Beauty Business” with celebrity hairstylist Kiyah Wright who didn’t mind her receiving credit on the cover, Neal decided, it was high time to author the books she wants to write.

“AfroCentric Style” is the first one out of the chute! But it’s not the Emmy Award winner and 2x Image Award nominee’s first contribution to the world of storytelling. Throughout her career, Neal has played a vital role in amplifying Black voices through her work in television, film, and ghostwriting.
Whether producing over one hundred hours of content for TV One, BET, NBC, CBS, The Travel Channel, A&E, TV Land, and The Africa Channel; contributing to EBONY, MOVIEMAKER, and the FORBES Magazine franchise; or ghostwriting the personal stories of notable individuals, Neal has consistently demonstrated her commitment to elevating stories that matter.
“I still love producing TV and Film,” she states. “In fact, I’m currently working with actors James Pickens, Jr. and Justin Chambers of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fame, on developing an exciting, limited TV series. But this book is a ‘Kingdom Work’ for me because it’s about a topic (Pop culture) and a passion of mine (Black culture and history) that appeals to, entertains, and educates a wide demo (young & old).”
With her new book release, Neal steps into the spotlight as a thought leader on issues of Black identity. Her ability to bridge the worlds of entertainment and literature makes her a powerful voice in contemporary discussions on media and culture.
“I sincerely want everyone who reads it — Black, white, brown, young, old, no matter — to have an appreciation for the influence of Blackness in pop culture and walk away saying, Hey, I never knew that! or Oh Yeah, I remember that(!) and want to share what they read with somebody,” she says. “I really hope people will not just wait ’til it drops on November 26 but pre-order now, because pre-orders help to get bestseller status, and that’s my aim!”

As conversations around identity and representation continue to evolve, Shirley Neal‘s “AfroCentric Style: A Celebration of Blackness & Identity in Pop Culture” is poised to be an important work in both literary and cultural discussions.
