*We’ve seen the story of Jesus told millions of times but you’ve never seen one like this! “The Book of Clarence” starring LaKeith Stanfield, tells the story of a man trying to emulate and live a life like Jesus.
In this film, you experience tales of two men with different agendas headed on the same path.
“In The Book of Clarence,” Clarence is an ambitious and determined man. And like most people, is trying to find his way in the world. He knows he has gifts, he just has trouble making those gifts work for him. He sees Jesus’ power and notoriety and wants to gain what he has.
To Clarence Jesus is just a man who learned how to manipulate people for his benefit. He doesn’t believe in Jesus’ true powers of healing and restoring. On Clarenece’s journey to become someone of importance, he learns a few hard lessons along the way. Along this journey with him is his best friend Elijah, played by RJ Cyler.
We spoke with Stanfield about the importance of telling a story like this from the Black perspective. He spoke about the significance of brotherhood, love, and other things that impact our lives.
“There’s a beautiful connection at the center of it between two Black men,” said Stanfield. ” That’s me and RJ’s character. Brotherhood, connectedness, and loyalty are beautiful images that we need to continue to show and continue to see. There are the trials that we deal with in terms of the power structure, the class system, racism, all these things are touched upon,” added Stanfield.
“The Book of Clarence” is filled with ambition, love, loyalty, trust, faith, and self-belief that will take you through your journey of self-reflection and discovery. Along with the focus being on Clarence’s goal to be this great man. Faith is an immense part of the story.
“This movie was definitely a big test of faith for me from beginning to end. And now with every other thing in life. I just be like look, it might look very stormy but RJ if we can make it through this come on big dog!” said Cyler about how the film impacted his own life.
What I enjoyed about this film was being able to relate to these characters. In most biblical films even though they take place in ancient Africa, the characters aren’t relatable and the stories come off as a fable. But in “The Book of Clarence” you experience the essence of Black culture, from the music and dancing to the comradery between friends, even having an ancient version of hookah lounge.
“The Book of Clarence” is more than a film, it is an experience! And you want to be a part of this experience when the film hits theaters on January 12t.
