*Primed for a breakthrough, emerging alt-pop, Nigerian-born, Texas-raised duo KAIRO unleash their debut album, ARE WE THERE YET?, out now via Def Jam Recordings. Listen to the full album, here.
The 13-track body of work is an illumination of KAIRO’s progression as it confidently stretches the boundaries of musical genres. A culmination of years’ worth of writing and growing as artists, ARE WE THERE YET? unfolds as the story of young Nigerian immigrant kids coming to America, as young men experiencing all the love and heartbreak, and two brothers working together pursuing their shared dream.
About the title of the album KAIRO explains, ARE WE THERE YET? serves as a through line between all our shared experiences — questioning each decision:
‘We graduated college and have made music our full-time job, are we there yet? We’ve made an album we are so proud of, are we there yet? Were the sacrifices of our parents worth it? Did we make you proud?’
KAIRO went on to add, “This album is crafted for the kids who embrace diverse genres and value authentic artists who share uniquely specific stories. KAIRO aims to be that artist for them.” Among many highlights, “FRONTLINES” layers a hypnotic vocal over big screen-ready strings, setting the tone for the journey to follow. On its heels, upbeat electric guitar and a head-nodding beat anchor “ANYBODY HOME?” Simultaneously, the pair take stock of their journey so far, “It’s really us.” Then, there’s “HEAVEN.” Soft guitar transmissions complement emotionally charged lyrics punctuated by a realization, “I’m in the middle of it all.” The finale “MAMA” concludes with a heartfelt last word. Buoyed by soaring orchestration and a thick bounce, towering vocals reach heavenly heights with a reminder, “Mama, I love you.”
By the way, in celebration of the release of their debut album, KAIRO will perform tonight, November 14 in Los Angeles at El Cid.
