*Idris Elba‘s Luther: The Fallen Sun” quietly made its mark on Netflix, becoming 2023’s second most-watched movie on Netflix.

Referencing Netflix’s first-ever Engagement Report, Screen Rant reports the feature generated 209.7 million hours of viewing time among viewers in the first half of the year. That second place ranking for “Luther: The Fallon Sun” comes behind the streamer’s most-watched film, the Jennifer Lopez starrer “The Mother.” Overall, “The Fallen Sun” is the 20th highest-ranked title on Netflix’s chart, combining viewing totals for movies and television shows.

The film’s success is a major win for Elba. The “Pacific Rim” actor stars in “The Fallen Sun” as troubled detective Chief Inspector John Luther. The feature is a sequel to the “Luther” crime drama, which starred Elba in the title role. The BBC series lasted five seasons between 2010 and 2019.

“The Fallen Sun,” which premiered on Netflix in February 2023, centers on a new adventure for Luther, who breaks out of prison to pursue a dangerous serial killer.

Luther: The Fallen Sun quietly became a massive streaming hit. The movie is a sequel to the BBC One crime drama Luther, which starred Idris Elba as the troubled Detective Chief Inspector John Luther and originally ran for five seasons between 2010 and 2019. Fallen Sun, which premiered on Netflix in February 2023, sees Elba return to the role for a new adventure that follows Luther breaking out of prison to track down a dangerous serial killer.

For its Engagement Report, Netflix shared “comprehensive viewership data for the first half of 2023, between January and June,” according to Screen Rant.

With its success on Netflix, the question now becomes: Will viewers see more of Luther?

As it stands now, there is no word from Netflix on an official follow-up to “The Fallen Sun,” either as a film or television season. Although no official announcement has been made, Netflix can’t help but explore the option, given its success this year.

With Elba expressing interest in making another Luther movie, anything is possible. Especially given the ending of “The Fallen Sun,” which implied that Elba’s heroic acts have opened the door to him being offered a job with MI5 instead of forcibly serving the rest of his prison sentence.

Screen Rant speculates “any number of news stories in the Luther universe” happening, with Luther’s story taking a cue from the show “White Collar.” In that series, Matt Bomer played a con man and art forger named Neal Caffrey. Caffrey, an inmate, serves his prison sentence working with the FBI while wearing an ankle monitor.

For Luther, Elba’s character could serve the remainder of his sentence working with MIS under certain restrictions.

So, what say you? Have you seen “Luther: The Fallen Sun?” If so, would you tune in for another Luther adventure? Weigh in below.
