*Michael C. Hall, the Emmy-nominated star who brought Dexter Morgan to life in Showtime’s hit series “Dexter,” returns to lend his voice to the character’s iconic inner monologue in the highly anticipated prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin.”
Set in 1991 Miami, the 10-episode drama unpacks the origins of America’s favorite serial killer in training as a young Dexter (Patrick Gibson) grapples with his dark urges while learning to follow the Code instilled by his father, Harry (Christian Slater). The story takes place 15 years before viewers first met Dexter in the hit SHOWTIME series.
“Dexter” aired from 2006 to 2013 and the limited series “Dexter: New Blood” ran for one season from 2021 to 2022. “Dexter: Resurrection” will debut in Summer 2025, picking up “right where we left off,” Hall previously shared.
“Dexter” was the #1 Showtime original and since the end of its run, has captured millions of fans and become a cult classic. Over time, it has built a rabid and loyal fan base in the tens of millions. The series recently had a resurgence, with over 1.4 billion viewing minutes across all platforms, per Variety.
We caught up with executive producer Clyde Phillips to discuss his vision behind the new prequel series and the origins of the Code.
Fans of the original series know that Dexter’s relationship with Harry is central to his moral framework. So how does “Dexter: Original Sin” explore their dynamic?
“People who have seen the show, the original Dexter, know that Dexter was found in a shipping container with blood with his dismembered mother. That was the beginning of his fate,” said Phillips. “And in fate, there is inevitability. And because of what happened to him as a child, there was no way that he was going to be normal. It was Harry’s responsibility to get Dexter to, in using Harry’s words…channel your urges to do good. That’s number two on the code (Code of Harry). Number one on the code is don’t get caught. And number three… make sure you’re right.”
Phillips continued, “Harry gives Dexter permission to do his first kill because… Harry’s life is in danger and he allows Dexter to do that and that sets off a whole other evolution of the character.
“…it’s a steep, steep, desperate learning curve because you can’t make a mistake. And again, part of the show is the family dynamic,” Phillips explained.
