*Donald Trump found himself in the proverbial hot seat at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Annual Convention, held today in Chicago. The tension-filled event, marked by provocative questions and heated exchanges, saw Trump defending his contested legacy while reaffirming his appeal to Black voters.
In a packed ballroom, three journalists took turns questioning Trump about his controversial past and associations. The session began with ABC News’ Rachel Scott, who didn’t mince words as she addressed what she described as the “elephant in the room.”
“A lot of people did not think it was appropriate for you to be here today,” Scott began, proceeding to list the false claims Trump had made about notable Black figures, including former President Barack Obama and Nikki Haley. Scott pressed further, mentioning Trump’s derogatory comments towards Black journalists and his infamous dinner with a white supremacist at Mar-a-Lago.
Trump, visibly irritated, began his response by criticizing the decorum of Scott’s questioning: “I don’t think I’ve ever been asked the question, in such a horrible manner, first question. You don’t even say hello, how are you?” he retorted, before launching into a tirade against ABC News, labeling it a “fake news network.”

Attempting to redirect the conversation, Trump pointed to his track record, highlighting employment achievements and opportunity zones created in collaboration with Senator Tim Scott. Yet, he sidestepped a direct response to Scott’s query about Black voter trust.
Further, into the session, Trump boldly compared his presidency to that of Abraham Lincoln, asserting he was the best president for the Black population since Lincoln, who famously emancipated enslaved people in the U.S. This grand assertion drew mixed reactions from the audience.
The conversation also veered toward Trump’s political rivals. He accused Vice President Kamala Harris of opportunistically claiming her Black heritage for career benefits, despite her longstanding identification as both Black and Southeast Asian. However, the commentators shot back that Kamala Harris has always identified as Black and Southeast Asian … and even attended an HBCU. Duh!
Attempting to clarify a past comment about “Black jobs” made during a June presidential debate, Trump explained that he meant any job held by a Black person. However, the response drew only a smattering of chuckles from the audience, indicating a lack of satisfaction with his clarification.
Trump’s controversial comment had stirred significant backlash when he insinuated illegal immigrants were seizing “Black jobs.” President Biden has since criticized this remark, underscoring that Black Americans have achieved the highest positions in government, including the Presidency and Vice Presidency.
Despite the friction, Trump’s attendance at the NABJ convention garnered much attention, evidenced by the massive line of attendees eager to witness the exchange. The controversy surrounding his presence had already ignited a firestorm among NABJ members, many of whom publicly expressed their displeasure with the organization’s decision to invite him.
Further fueling the discussion, Vice President Kamala Harris’s absence was noted, especially since NABJ’s leadership reportedly declined her offer to appear remotely. Talks are now underway to arrange a Q&A session with Harris in September.
Regarding the Harris/NAJB appearance issue, The Hollywood Reporter is citing an April Ryan report in The Grio that the NABJ team initially had denied a request for Harris to appear in a virtual fireside chat but then, according to multiple sources, was scrambling this week to get the vice president’s team to consider a virtual town hall after the backlash surrounding Trump’s appearance grew. Team Harris declined as the NABJ had already declined the idea of a virtual appearance.
Trump’s appearance at the NABJ convention may have started on a rocky note, but it was certainly a focal point of discussion, drawing attention and sparking debate on both sides of the spectrum. As the GOP presidential candidate continues to vie for support from Black voters, today’s events underscore the contentious path ahead in his drive for re-election.
