*In the ever-evolving landscape of professional sports, the WNBA has emerged as a powerful force for its athletic prowess and its unwavering commitment to social justice. Dawn Porter’s latest documentary, “Power of the Dream,” available on Prime Video, delves into the inspiring stories of WNBA icons and their indomitable spirit in the face of adversity. In an exclusive interview with EUR, Porter shared her journey in bringing this compelling narrative to life.
Porter, known for her profound works on social justice (“John Lewis: Good Trouble” Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court), found herself venturing into the world of sports through this project. “a media company initiated by female athletes, including Sue Bird and Simone Manuel. “Sue and Nneka Ogwumike wanted to tell the story of what happened for a while, and they made some traction with Amazon. I made a four-part series for ESPN about the history of Title IX, which was my first experience in doing sports stories. This project perfectly matched my interests in women, politics, and civil rights.”
Porter highlighted the unique unity within the WNBA, particularly in their political activism. “Throughout history, athletes like Muhammad Ali and Colin Kaepernick have been remarkable. But what’s different about the WNBA is their unity. They figured out a way to listen to each other, speak to each other, and come to a unified approach. It’s 144 players in the WNBA, and getting them all to agree on something is a testament to their leadership skills.”
This unity was particularly evident in their response to WNBA team owner Kelly Loeffler’s disparagement of their efforts for change. Their advocacy for Raphael Warnock, who later voted for Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first African-American female Supreme Court justice, showcases their tangible impact on politics.
Porter’s challenge was balancing personal stories with broader social movements. “Each woman’s story could fully support her own film.
Their histories, battles, and interests are incredibly interesting. But we wanted to focus on their advocacy. We aimed to show their togetherness and how they operate as a league, which is key to their success.”
Looking ahead, Porter sees a continued impact from the WNBA. “They have never had a larger platform. With many more games televised and their massive social media following, the potential for their impact is massive. They will be strategic and targeted, leveraging their experiences and power.”
Porter’s admiration for the WNBA is evident throughout “Power of the Dream.” The documentary celebrates their athletic achievements and underscores their role as agents of change. As Porter aptly puts it, “Your platform matters, and they chose to use their powers for good.”
