‘David Oyelowo & Anna Diop Talk Filming ‘The Book of Clarence’ | Watch

“The Book of Clarence” gives an overdue new look to biblical films!

The cast includes LaKeith Stanfield (Clarence), Anna Diop (Clarence’s love-interest), David Oyelowo (John the Baptist), Teyana Taylor, and Alfre Woodard.”The Book of Clarence” will take viewers through an emotional roller coaster as they watch Clarence’s journey of self-discovery.

Throughout his journey, Clarence tries all kinds of ways to make money. He’s the local hustler but he knows that won’t make a better life for himself and his family. And most importantly he knows that’s not the way to win the heart of his lady friend. He takes notice of Jesus’ notoriety and respect and sets out to be more like him. He feels if he can make the same impact as Jesus he can gain that same respect.

Clarence is one of those people who has so much potential but doesn’t know how to materialize that potential, which leads him to emulate another man. Diop’s character can see right through Clarence and even though she can see his potential she’s hesitant to give him a chance. We spoke with Diop about her character and what her thoughts were on dating what you see in someone versus who they are at the moment.

“Me and my girlfriends, one of our golden rules is don’t date potential. And I think Varenya definitely holds that as well, which is why she doesn’t move forward with Clarence,” said Diop. This is also easier said than done. Clarence and Varenya have a connection that is beautiful to watch on screen, that push and pull taps into the rom-com realm.

What is a Black film without good music, dancing, and characters you can relate to?

“To have ourselves represented in film that is playful but also reverential in relation to faith,” said Oyelowo about his experiences while filming. “And to have a director who is so plugged into the culture. The whole thing was just an extraordinarily joyful experience.”

You can tap into that joyful experience when “The Book of Clarence” hits theaters on January 12th.
