*In an eye-catching, and yes, funny performance, comedian D.L. Hughley recently turned his comedic talents toward political commentary, launching a series of witty remarks aimed at former President Donald Trump and expressing support for Vice President Kamala Harris.
“If you told 15-year-old me that I’d be on stage supporting a prosecutor and a teacher, there’s no way I would have believed you,” said Hughley, referring to Harris and her running mate Tim Walz. However, in his speech, Hughley acknowledged a previous misstep when he echoed a false attack that Harris had incarcerated 1,500 Black men for marijuana offenses. After doing more thorough research, Hughley has since come to support Harris, even interviewing her at an event in Milwaukee.
Hughley didn’t shy away from addressing Trump’s past comments about Harris. At the National Association of Black Journalists convention on July 31, Trump suggested that Harris had decided to “turn Black” for political gain—an accusation that Hughley vehemently dismissed with his characteristic humor.
“Kamala’s been Black a lot longer than Trump’s been a Republican,” Hughley fired back, drawing laughter and applause. He further pointed to the bipartisan support Harris has garnered, referencing the group Republicans for Kamala by quipping, “I guess Donald Trump will finally know what it’s like when you get left for a younger woman.”
Hughley shared that his change of heart came after a meeting with Harris where she encouraged him to delve into her background. This led Hughley to rethink his position, ultimately leading him to a full-throated endorsement.
“I was wrong,” Hughley admitted. “And I am so very glad I was wrong because Kamala you give me hope for the future.” He later added, “I’m here apologizing to the whole damn world.”
Concluding his remarks, Hughley passionately declared his support for Harris at the Democratic National Committee event: “I believe in Kamala Harris. She has the vision, the experience, and the strength to lead our nation as the 47th President of the United States.”
Hughley’s endorsement underscores the growing support for Vice President Harris among a diverse range of individuals, highlighting her appeal beyond traditional political boundaries. His personal journey from skepticism to advocacy serves as a potent reminder of the importance of informed opinions in the political discourse.
Hughley’s performance, filled with humor and sincerity, encapsulates a larger narrative of evolving public perception and the potential for unity in a politically polarized society.
We can only wonder how long it’ll take Dr. Umar Johnson to come for D.L. for supporting Harris. If so, get out the popcorn.
