*In a moment both powerful and inspiring, Alexis Smith, the newly crowned Miss Kansas, used her platform to bravely confront her abuser who was present in the audience during her win at Pratt Community College. The 25-year-old Wichita native did not let the unexpected appearance from someone she has been healing from disrupt her moment of achievement.
“My vision as the next Miss Kansas is to eliminate unhealthy and abusive relationships,” Smith declared on stage, capturing the essence of her newfound role as a brand ambassador for Miss Kansas. Her emotional speech, shared on her X account, resonated deeply with many, especially when she revealed, “Some of you out in this audience saw me very emotional because my abuser is here today.”
Despite this confrontation, Smith affirmed her commitment to representing her community on the national stage.
“But that’s not going to stop me from being on this Miss Kansas stage and from representing as the next Miss Kansas because I, and my community, deserve healthy relationships.” The crowd responded with an electrifying wave of applause and cheers, celebrating her courage, according to an NY Post report.
Later, Smith expressed her determination to transform pain into purpose in a heartfelt Facebook post.
“On the night of Miss Kansas, my journey took an unexpected turn when someone I have been healing from tried to disrupt my peace,” she shared. “Instead of falling into silence, I chose to live out my vision for a better world. I took back the power — not just for myself, but for my dreams and everyone watching and listening.”
Her stance was not about ostracizing others but about setting a powerful example of resilience and advocacy. “I turned my pain into purpose and channeled it in a way that unifies and uplifts,” she explained. Smith’s bravery did not go unnoticed. Social media platforms were flooded with support from hundreds of individuals praising her courage.
“Thank you so much for speaking your truth!!!! You are inspiring and I hope my daughter can meet you and learn to stand in her power like you are doing,” a Facebook user commented. Another user expressed, “I could not love this anymore. You ARE an inspiration Miss Alexis Smith & Thank You for standing strong & true to yourself.”
Recognition for Smith’s advocacy also came from the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence, which lauded her bravery and activism as truly inspiring.
Smith’s fight against domestic violence is deeply personal. In an interview with KSNW, she disclosed that “every single woman” in her family has been affected by domestic violence. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “At the age of 14, I got into my first relationship, but it was also an abusive relationship that I was in until about 2018, 2019. It’s something that I’m still experiencing and dealing with today.”
As Miss Kansas, Smith aims to utilize her platform, which emphasizes empowering women, to share her struggles and advocate for others.
“And me, being a woman who needed that empowerment all my life, being a bystander to domestic violence, a victim, a survivor, and now an advocate, as well as a young woman who is educationally driven, I have the opportunity not only to share my story on such a large scale but also go back to school.”
Smith’s trailblazing path led her to prevail over 26 other contestants, earning her a spot at the Miss America pageant set for January next year. Her platform, “Respect Reclaimed: Advocating for Healthy Relationships,” symbolizes her commitment to fostering awareness and support for healthy, respectful partnerships.
In a world where silence often perpetuates suffering, Alexis Smith’s bold stance as Miss Kansas serves as a beacon of hope and a call to action for many enduring similar struggles. Her journey from victim to advocate is a testament to the strength and resilience that lies within, inspiring countless others to reclaim their power and aim for a future free from abuse.
