Trailer Drops for Tyler Perry’s ‘Maxine’s Baby’ Documentary

*The trailer has dropped for the upcoming documentary about Tyler Perry’s life and career titled “Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story.”

We reported previously that the doc will be screened at AFI Fest 2023. “Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story” will make its world premiere on October 27 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

The film is described as “a tender, intimate portrait of the writer, actor, filmmaker, studio head and media mogul.”

“Working on this film for the past decade has been a life-changing journey for the both of us. Getting intimately acquainted with the man behind the icon while witnessing the transformative impact of Mr. Perry’s work within various communities has been truly awe-inspiring,” said directors Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz in a joint statement. “We hope this film is more than a road to success story, but rather, a meditation on healing, unconditional love and an inspiration to audiences.”

Perry’s career as an actor, writer, producer, and director spans three decades, and his movies have grossed $1.5 billion at the domestic box office. In October 2019, the entertainment mogul opened Tyler Perry Studios on the site of a former 330-acre Confederate military base in Atlanta.

“My problem with a lot of things in life is I can float above it. That’s just from childhood, from abuse,” Perry says in the trailer, per Variety. “So, every moment, it’s like, ‘You’re okay, you’re safe.’ It’s just the emotion. It’s just feeling. It’s love.”

The title of the doc is a nod to Perry’s late mother Willie Maxine Perry, who died in 2009.

“I had all these people tell me what I would never be. Nobody said what I could be,” Perry said of his experience when he first landed in Hollywood, but it was his mother who told him, “Don’t ever let anybody tell you who you are. You know who you are.”

“Tyler Perry is a creative force of nature – a multi-hyphenate who forged his own path to seismic impact in the world of storytelling while also inspiring the next generation to follow in his footsteps,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO, per the news release. “MAXINE’S BABY is an epic celebration of a modern maverick, and it is AFI’s honor to shine a proper light upon Mr. Perry and the film at AFI FEST.”

Per the news release, AFI Fest runs October 25-29 and will include a curated selection of special screenings, world cinema, documentaries, and shorts. To learn more about AFI FEST, visit FEST.AFI.com.
