Special Needs Student Who Attacked School Employee Over Nintendo to Be Charged as Adult

*The high school student in Florida who attacked a school employee after she reportedly took away his Nintendo Switch will be charged as an adult.

EUR reported previously, citing CNN, that the 17-year-old was arrested after a video showed him attacking Joan Naydich at Matanzas High School on February 21. According to an arrest report, the teen stated he was upset because the employee had taken away his Nintendo Switch device and that he would “beat her up” every time she took away his game.

As Law & Crime reports, the boy is considered a special needs student and reportedly lives in a group home. He was charged with felony aggravated battery with bodily harm, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

“The student stated that he was upset because the victim took his Nintendo Switch away from him during class,” said police after his arrest.

The school employee who was attacked by the minor was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Her family and friends launched a GoFundMe to raise funds to cover costs for her medical and basic living expenses.

“The actions of this student are absolutely horrendous and completely uncalled for,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in the release. “We hope the victim will be able to recover, both mentally and physically, from this incident. Thankfully, students and staff members came to the victim’s aid before the [school resource deputies] could arrive. Our schools should be a safe place — for both employees and students.”

The student is reportedly being held on a $1 million bond, according to FOX 35 Orlando.

Staly said he supported the decision to transfer the student’s case to the adult court.

“This student is just six months shy of age 18, and it was also a brutal attack on this teacher,” he told FOX 35. “Fortunately, this didn’t result in a fatality. This could be a homicide we are talking about.”

Meanwhile, Naydich has been released from the hospital and she shared an update via GoFundMe stating: “This certainly wasn’t how I saw my son’s senior year turning out for our family,” said Naydich, whose son is a student at the school where she was violently assaulted.

“Overwhelmed with the idea of the long fight ahead … your contributions are lessening that burden and I’m truly grateful!” said Naydich. “I’m hopeful that the awareness of this incident being spread far and wide will prevent anyone else from ever dealing with the trauma, physical healing and disruption of everyday life that this has caused. It’s touching to know that so many care.”

The woman also made clear that she “never took the Nintendo Switch from him.”

“From anyone that’s read or heard differently, I’ve been told this was unfortunately misinformation,” Naydich added.
