*The new Peacock film “Shooting Stars,” directed by Emmy nominee Chris Robinson gives insight into the origins of basketball legend LeBron James and his high school basketball team. Starring Caleb McLaughlin of “Stranger Things” fame as “Lil Dru” and Marquis “Mookie” Cook in his screen debut as James.

The movie takes viewers back to the 1990s to witness the extraordinary story of James and his closest friends. Based on the book by James and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Buzz Bissinger, the film follows the incredible rise of the “Fab Four” – James, Lil Dru, Willie McGee, and Sian Cotton—as they navigate the challenges of high school basketball, racial tension, and the power of friendship, with an incredible ensemble cast, including Wood Harris, Dermot Mulroney, and Natalie Paul.

EUR talked with McLaughlin and Cook about building chemistry during filming. McLaughlin mentioned they didn’t have to force their bond; it naturally developed as they spent the entire summer together. They hung out, played video games, went bowling, and even rode scooters.

The key was spending time together and enjoying each other’s company. Cook added that they built a genuine bond by being on set together and living in the same apartment building. While going over lines and working on scenes helped, the organic connection they formed off-camera truly brought them closer.

As for Cook, taking on the role of James as his onscreen debut came with some pressure, but it was a great opportunity for him.

McLaughlin also emphasized the significance of their visit to Spring Hill apartments, where James grew up. Exploring LeBron’s hometown and understanding who he was as a person added a layer of authenticity to their performances.

He added, “LeBron is still friends with the same group of guys to this day, which speaks volumes about his loyalty and love for the people in his life. In a world where many become successful and forget about the people they grew up with, LeBron’s continued connection with his childhood friends is incredible.”

“Shooting Stars” is available on Peacock beginning June 2.
