RadioScope Reheat: Tone Lōc called out labelmate Young MC in 1989 | Listen/Watch

Tone Lōc celebrates his 57th birthday today

*Pour yourself some funky cold medina for a birthday toast to Tone Lōc, who turns 57 today (03-03-23).

We grabbed an interview with the 80s/90s icon in the midst of his sudden success with “Wild Thing” and “Funky Cold Medina,” the first two singles from his then-forthcoming debut album, “Lōc-ed After Dark.” The rapper told us that “Wild Thing” was initially the album’s lone dance/guitar-laced track specifically targeting the clubs, and how its carbon copy, “Funky Cold Medina,” was only rushed into existence to ride the coattails of “Wild Thing” once it became a phenomenon. At the time, his Delicious Vinyl labelmate, Young MC, claimed to have written both singles. In this 1989 Radioscope Reheat, the gravelly-voiced emcee said that wasn’t entirely true.
