Spotify has rounded out the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop with an animated telling of the genre’s origin. Spotify called on Yonkers rapper Jadakiss to serve as narrator, detailing the New York roots of the now global phenomenon.

“As the story goes, hip hop officially began in the Bronx when DJ Kool Herc threw a birthday party for his sister on August 11, 1973,” expressed Jadakiss. “By using two record players and a mixer to alternate between them, he introduced what would become known as scratching, ultimately laying the sonic blueprint for the genre.”

“Once a local upstart, hip hop has since traveled all around the country and the world, transforming and evolving as each place and the artists within adapt it to match their own local flair,” shared the New York native.

As August comes to a close and everyone reflects on the past 50 years of Hip Hop, Spotify’s Creative Director and Head of Urban Music, Carl Chery, shared his thoughts on hip-hop’s global impact.

“I think American artists approach music with a much more global mindset now. They’re aware that there’s an entire world to conquer out there,” explained Chery. “We’re also seeing more artists from global markets having success in the U.S. Central Cee is a great example. We’re now in a space where culture can originate in Toronto, London, Paris, or Nigeria and make its way to the U.S.”

Chery’s tenure at Spotify has opened up a number of conversations around Hip Hop and culture through the expansion of the RapCaviar playlist into a podcast, Hulu docuseries, and curated events and campaigns such as the female rap focused LA event Feelin’ Myself, and All-RapCaviar inspired by pro basketball.
