*Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Angela Bassett came up short as far as winning a Best Supporting Actress award at the 2023 Oscars. Instead, the prize went to Jamie Lee Curtis. But it’s Bassett’s reaction to not winning that got folks online talking
It was Bassett who was expected by many to go home with the prize for her now iconic role in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” but it was not to be. Curtis who took home the Oscar for her role in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’
It’s worth noting that during this awards season, Bassett won the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards for the same category. Meanwhile, Curtis won at the Screen Guild Actors Awards, which are usually closer to how the Academy votes.
When Bassett heard the presenters say Curtis’ name you could see that she was not a happy camper because she knew she had lost. Showing how much it hurt, she also didn’t even stand up or clap while seated in the front row.

Some social media users were disappointed for Bassett and felt her pain while others were not happy about her not clapping or standing for Curtis.
“Angela Bassett’s reaction hurts me,” one person said.
“Regardless of who won that Oscar… Angela Bassett could have clapped for the winner. To just sit there and not clap because you didn’t win …” a Twitter user said.
“Dayumm #AngelaBassett it’s ok. It’s called losing gracefully. Sitting with a scowl all pissed,” another person tweeted.
