*In a certified throwback to the ’90s, former O.J. Simpson trial prosecutor Christopher Darden is launching his run for a seat on the Los Angeles Superior Court with the backing of the judge in the infamous case, Lance Ito.

Darden’s campaign broke the news of Ito’s support on Nov. 13.

“I have always had tremendous respect for Judge Lance Ito,” the 67-year-old former deputy district attorney said in a statement. “As a prosecutor, a judge, and a retired jurist, Judge Ito has always conducted himself with the utmost professionalism and sets the standard for fairness on the bench. I am so honored to have his support as I now seek a seat on the Superior Court.”

Although the pair are best known for their respective roles in the O.J. trial, Deadline reports Darden and Ito previously worked together as prosecutors in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The duo was part of what was known at the time as the Hardcore Gang Division.

During the O.J. trial, Darden, who has more than 40 years under his belt as an attorney, was the lead prosecutor, while Ito presided over the proceedings. The televised Simpson murder trial, which occurred in 1994, is noted for dominating news programming in the ’90s with constant coverage. In addition, the case spawned the Oscar-winning 2016 documentary “O.J.: Made in America” and the Emmy-winning “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” which was released the same year.

In “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” Darden was portrayed by Sterling K. Brown. The former “This Is Us” star’s portrayal of the attorney resulted in an Emmy win for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

In running for a seat on the L.A. County Superior Court, Darden brings his experience as a criminal defense attorney and deputy district attorney. In addition, Darden’s background includes time as a legal commentator for CNBC, Court TV, NBC, and CNN, as well as serving as a law professor at Southwestern University School of Law.

For the past 27 years, Darden’s legal activities have been in the realm of private practice, according to Deadline, which noted the lawyer’s 15-year stint as a county prosecutor.

Unlike Darden, Ito has since transitioned into life beyond the courtroom, retiring in 2015.

Darden’s election for the LA County Superior Court seat will take place on March 5.
