Tom Hanks, in one of his best roles yet, stars as the grumpy Otto Anderson in “A Man Called Otto.” The story is based on the bestseller “A Man Called Ove.” Otto has given up on life since his wife has passed, and he sees no reason to live. Plus, life has been complicated by the fact that he’s forced into retirement after decades as an engineer.
Otto is also irked by those irresponsible neighbors who disregard parking procedures, have unkept yards, and refuse to put garbage in the proper receptacles. New neighbors Marisol (Mariana Treviño), her husband, Tommy (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), arrive with their children to further add to his distress.
In spite of life’s drawbacks, Otto goes out on a ledge and becomes a superhero when he saves a man’s life. Closer to home, Otto goes out on a limb and saves his neighbor’s home from being taken over by the vile predators, Dye & Merica. This predatory, parasitic real estate organization is represented by agent Mike Birbiglia.

Dye & Merica, depicting corporate greed and dishonesty, constantly monitors Otto’s neighborhood. It seeks to convince the elderly to sell their homes so that Dye & Merica can redevelop the area for pricier homes. This current scourge of the nation by corporate realtors can be seen in the headlines: “A $60 Billion Housing Grab by Wall Street “ – The New York Times, “Wall Street is buying up family homes” – 60 Minutes. “Investment firms, like Tricon Residential, buying a substantial number of homes for sale in high-migration areas of the U.S”… And the stories go on and on.
Blacks have always been dealt a devastating blow regarding homeownership because of redlining and gentrification. This increasing trend will make it even harder.
Directed by Marc Forster, “A Man Called Otto” is the perfect way to end 2022. A film with substance that entertains. Juanita Jennings and Peter Lawson Jones also star in “A Man Called Otto.”
