Rev Run, The Roots Freestyle on NYC Subway | ‘The Tonight Show’

Rev Run and Jimmy Fallon
Rev Run on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon – Feb. 24, 2020

*Monday’s entire broadcast of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” was filmed on a New York City subway, which gave one of the show’s regular segments, Freestylin’ With the Roots, an extra layer of authenticity.

During non-subway shows back in the studio, the segment features the Roots improvising songs about chosen audience members based solely on a brief interview with Fallon. The lyrics are written on the spot by lead rapper Black Thought.

On Monday’s NYC underground outing, Jimmy and his house band improv songs about New York City subway riders on the spot. One of the riders, it turns out, is a hip hop pioneer and one third of the historic group Run DMC.
