Trailer for D’Angelo Documentary ‘Devil’s Pie’ Explores His 2014 Comeback [WATCH]

*R&B icon D’Angelo will give fans a peek into his life in an upcoming documentary called “Devil’s Pie: D’Angelo.”

Directed by Dutch filmmaker and photographer Carine Bijlsma, the film combines rare and never-before-seen footage with interviews from the singer’s family, management and collaborators such as Questlove, who offer insight into D’Angelo’s personal and professional life, Complex reports.

The film, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, will touch on D’Angelo’s substance abuse and also explore the fears of the Richmond, VA-native — including what prompted him to take a 14-year hiatus following the release of his “Voodoo” album in 2000.

“Devil’s Pie” will also dive into D’Angelo’s recording sessions for the “Black Messiah” album, as Bijlsma was invited to follow him on his 2015 Second Coming tour.

As noted by Billboard, “Devil’s Pie” ends on “a vague, but promising, note” about D’Angelo’s return. During a Q&A after the Tribeca screening, Bijlsma said new music from the R&B star is on the way: “He’s actually doing really well, and he’s very excited… He was in the studio these past weeks. He has big plans for the future, so you’ll definitely be seeing more of him,” she said.

No release date for “Devil’s Pie” has been announced yet.

D’Angelo released a new song, “Unshaken,” back in October that was included in the video game Red Dead Redemption 2.
