*Tina Turner opened up to the New York Times about her retirement, her new musical, and how she’s living her best life while vibin’ out to Coldplay.
But she said of the band’s lead singer, Chris Martin, “He doesn’t have that really good black voice, like Motown —”… And that’s okay, because she’s mad about the group’s single “Coldplay with the Chainsmokers.”
At 79 years old, Turner, who has been retired for 10 years, says she’s enjoying her golden years by doing nothing at all.
“I don’t sing. I don’t dance. I don’t dress up,” she told the Times.
“I was just tired of singing and making everybody happy,” she added. “That’s all I’d ever done in my life.”

The music icon has, however, consulted closely on “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” directed by Phyllida Lloyd (“Mamma Mia!”) and based on her life and scored with her hits. The show has brought a Tina to London and Hamburg, and it soon will bring her to Broadway, when the $16.5 million production begins performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater next month, per NY Times.

The critically acclaimed production received its world premiere in April 2018 in London and subsequently has broken all Box Office records at the Aldwych Theatre. Earlier this year the German premiere of Tina – THE Tina TURNER MUSICAL began performances at the Stage Operettenhaus in Hamburg and the musical will begin Broadway performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre from 12 October 2019.
Much like the 1993 biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” the stage musical shows Tina Turner standing up to her abusive ex-husband Ike Turner before running to freedom; in real life, the singing legend has never revealed the full extent of his abuse. “I think I’m ashamed,” she said. “I feel I told enough.”
Turner first documented the violence in her 1986 book “I, Tina,” but when “What’s Love Got to Do With It” came out, she didn’t watch it because she didn’t need to relive that nightmare.
“I don’t know if I could ever forgive all that Ike ever did to me, but “Ike’s dead,” Turner laughed. “So we don’t have to worry about him.”
When it comes to young pop stars on the rise, “She’ll make a good Tina” is her response to any budding singer or those who have already made names for themselves…. such as Beyonce.
