*Checking in early for a flight is one of the simplest ways to cut down on travel day headaches before you even leave the house. The majority of airlines open their online check-in process a full 24 hours before departure, and using that window wisely can work in your favor in multiple ways.
As Travel and Leisure reports, seat availability is one of the first things affected by check-in timing. Passengers who delay run the risk of being stuck in a middle seat, while earlier check-ins tend to have more favorable options available. On some international routes, seat assignments cannot be made until check-in begins, which makes getting in the queue early especially worthwhile.
Flight overbooking is common practice — carriers are legally allowed to sell more tickets than there are seats. When no-shows fail to materialize and a flight is at capacity, airlines may need to move passengers to another departure. Check-in order can factor into that decision, with later arrivals to the process bearing the most risk.

Luggage deadlines add another layer of urgency. Most domestic travelers checking a bag need to have it submitted no fewer than 45 minutes before the plane is scheduled to leave, giving TSA enough time to screen it. That requirement jumps to a full hour for international departures. Individual airports may impose even stricter timelines — travelers checking bags on domestic flights out of JFK, for example, face a 60-minute minimum.
Getting checked in ahead of the crowd can also strengthen an upgrade request. Airlines frequently weigh request timing when deciding who receives an available upgrade, so submitting early could give you an edge over travelers at the same status level.
No matter how early you complete online check-in, budget at least two hours at the airport for domestic travel and three for international departures.
