*Wendy Williams continues to navigate significant health and legal challenges as her guardianship has been extended to November 5, 2025.
Legal documents obtained by PEOPLE reveal that Williams underwent extensive medical and neuropsychological testing, including brain imaging, confirming her diagnoses of frontotemporal dementia and aphasia, first identified two years ago. These conditions have profoundly impacted her life, leading to her residence in a memory care facility.
Sabrina Morrissey, Williams’ guardian since 2022, has requested a three-month extension to continue overseeing the entertainer’s affairs. This decision follows a series of tests highlighting the severity of Williams’ conditions. However, the extension may face opposition, as attorneys representing Williams’ family are reportedly considering a challenge to Morrissey’s role, signaling potential tension in the ongoing legal saga.
Williams has been vocal about her frustration with the guardianship, asserting her mental competence. During a March appearance on “The View,” she expressed her discontent, stating, “I am not permitted to do anything but stay on this floor, the memory unit floor, where these people are 90 and 80 and 70. Look, I’m 60. Why am I here…where people don’t remember anything?”
The guardianship and health struggles follow a tumultuous period for Williams, which was partly documented in the one-hour special “TRAPPED: What Is Happening to Wendy Williams?” that premiered on May 19 on Investigation Discovery.

A collaboration between ID, Telepictures, and EXTRA, the documentary examines the #FreeWendy movement, driven by fans advocating for Williams’ release from her guardianship, in place since 2022 due to her frontotemporal dementia and aphasia diagnoses. The film traces Williams’ trailblazing career in radio and TV, her cultural impact, and the controversies surrounding her health and autonomy. Featuring interviews with journalists, medical and legal experts, and rare archival footage from EXTRA, “TRAPPED” offers a poignant exploration of Williams’ rise and the ongoing legal and personal struggles she faces.
As Williams continues to face these challenges, her case raises broader questions about autonomy, care, and the complexities of managing health crises in the public eye. The extension of her guardianship marks another chapter in her fight to reclaim control over her life.
