* A surprising new issue is surfacing at U.S. airports: TSA detentions triggered by excessive sweating in sensitive areas.
Dubbed “swamp crotch” online, Union Rayo reports that this uncomfortable condition is leading to awkward security pat-downs and public embarrassment for travelers who’ve done nothing wrong. The root of the problem lies in the TSA’s body scanners, which rely on millimeter-wave technology to detect irregularities. These scanners are designed to identify potential threats by analyzing how waves reflect off the body. However, moisture from sweat, especially in the groin area, can distort these signals, flagging it as an “anomaly.”
As communication expert Shawna Malvini Redden, author of “101 Pat-Downs, explains, “perspiration is probably the weirdest thing that can trigger the scanner. It all comes down to how the waves interact with water.” The result is a mandatory pat-down, often focusing on the arms and groin, leaving travelers mortified.
Passengers have shared their experiences online, recounting how they were pulled aside for additional checks despite carrying no prohibited items. One woman, wearing standard underwear and biker shorts with no jewelry or piercings, reported being flagged on both her outbound and return flights. Others note that tight clothing or sanitary pads can also trigger false alarms, particularly for women during menstruation. The issue is especially prevalent in summer, when heat and humidity amplify perspiration.
Avoiding these searches is challenging. Some travelers suggest visiting the bathroom before security to dry off, but there’s no guaranteed fix. Light, breathable clothing may help, but the scanners remain sensitive to moisture. These incidents don’t just inconvenience travelers—they can feel deeply humiliating, as passengers are singled out in front of others for a natural bodily function.

While the TSA maintains that these protocols are essential for safety, many question whether the technology or procedures could be refined to reduce false positives. For now, travelers should prepare for the possibility of extra scrutiny, especially in hot weather.
A quick stop to freshen up might lower the odds of an uncomfortable encounter, but as long as sweat triggers scanners, no one is entirely spared from this awkward reality.
