*Pres. Donald Trump‘s decision to attend the White House Correspondents Association dinner for the first time as president proved to be a dangerous RSVP. A suspected gunman was taken into custody Saturday night after shots were fired outside the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, sending attendees—including President Donald Trump and members of the press—into a brief but intense state of alarm. The gunman will appear in court on Monday.
According to authorities, the suspect, a 31-year-old engineer from Torrance, California, Cole Thomas Allen, was quickly subdued by Secret Service agents after discharging a weapon at the Washington Hilton. Officials confirmed he was carrying multiple firearms, all of which were recovered at the scene. The suspect said in a manifesto to his family that the venue was not very secure. One officer survived being shot, protected by a bulletproof vest.
Allen wrote a “manifesto” indicating he planned to target all Trump administration officials at the event. He wrote that he would take out officials in the order of their position from highest to lowest. He had anti-Trump verbiage on his social media pages and had participated in No Kings rallies.
Allen had checked into the Hilton Hotel, dashed through security, and began to open fire. Photographers caught the intense moment, placing themselves in harm’s way. The bullets intended for officials could have struck them.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer was on his way to the latrine at the very moment the incident occurred when a Secret Service agent possibly saved his life. He said on Sunday that the agent yelled for him to get down and dove on top of him to protect him from bullets flying near the security checkpoint
The incident unfolded just as the salad at the high-profile dinner was being served. Witnesses reported hearing loud popping sounds, initially mistaken by some as dropped equipment, before Secret Service agents rushed in with weapons drawn and instructed guests to take cover under their tables.
In an impromptu press briefing shortly after the incident, President Trump described the moment as being movie-like and referred to the suspect as a thug.
“I was totally shocked that something happened,” the president said, addressing a packed press room. “The First Lady and I heard a noise—I thought it was a tray going down. It was a pretty loud noise and quite far away. He hadn’t breached the area at all.”
The First Lady can be seen on C-SPAN video asking, “What happened?” after the loud sound caused commotion. It distracted her and the POTUS from a conversation with the special guest Oz Pearlman who seemed to be demonstration something to them.
They were suddenly whisked away with the president of the correspondent’s association crawling on the ground behind them.
Trump emphasized that security measures in place prevented the suspect, who was a guest at the hotel, from entering the protected zone. Cole stated in a manifesto sent to his family that the area was not secured well.
“The room was very, very secure,” the president told the reporters who were still wearing their gowns and tuxedos in the Brady Briefing Room. “He charged from about 50 yards away, but they acted very quickly. I was very impressed with Secret Service—and I’m usually the one who would complain.”
The FBI released video that Pres. Trump posted hours later revealed how close they’d come to disaster. Everything happened fast, but frightened guests were held in the ballroom until agents panned the hotel to find other possible bad actors or threats. They believe Cole acted alone. Authorities say Allen was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
Liberals and Conservatives alike are saying the shooting was staged. “Staged” was the trending topic on X as numerous people argued that it is beyond coincidental that Trump has repeatedly avoided death. One moment in particular about the level of horror and realness the incident caused was captured on the face of Erica Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk. She was caught on video sobbing while being escorted out after coming close to experiencing gun violence, which is how her husband’s life was taken. For her, perhaps, it was the alarming thought that she could have had a similar fate to her husband.
The attack endangered everyone in the ballroom. Had the assassination attempts happened many journalists and high-level officials could have lost their lives. The shooter stated that he had no intent to harm others but would if he had to. Seated at the head table were Pres. Donald Trump and the First Lady Trump, Vice Pres. JD Vance along with the WHCA leadership. In the audience were officials from all across Washington including Speaker Mike Johnson, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Sec. of Defense Pete Hegseth and many others. The possible mass shooting could have been a Trump Administration and media wipe out.
Karoline Leavitt, an expectant mother with an imminent due date was also near the front of the room and despite the stress of the incident stood on the side of the briefing room when the POTUS spoke. Trump’s spokesperson and her unborn child were exposed to the possible mass shooting. As a Trump Administration official, she too could have been on the hit list.
Journalists are pushing back on the theory that the assassination was coordinated by insiders, with former WHCA President Eugene Daniels commenting that this view lacks empathy. Yet, across social media platforms in public discourse it is clear that a coordinated, clandestine effort to keep Pres, Trump in office somehow is afoot.
A front row reporter asked the POTUS why he thinks this keeps happening to him. His reply was a combination of self-aggrandizement and reality about the job of the presidency.
“I’ve studied assassinations and the most impactful people—the ones who do the most—they’re often the ones targeted,” Trump said. “It’s a dangerous profession.”
He also called for unity in the aftermath of the scare.
“We need to resolve our differences—Republicans, Democrats, and independents,” Trump said.
Broadly, heated political rhetoric and violent outbursts have been the source of division in the country and appear to have increased in Trump’s second term both inside and outside of the media.

ASIDE: Thousands of journalists inside the Hilton Ballroom became the story. It is an industry practice to keep attention on the subject and not make stories personal. Yet, everyone in attendance at the 2026 White House Correspondents Dinner played a part in the story as thousands of journos were at risk of harm. If the shooter had entered the ballroom and exchanged fire with law enforcement anyone could have been struck. The them of the event was about protecting the First Amendment, the Constitutional right that has protected journalists to tell the truth and not sanitize stories about government officials. This moment underscores the importance of the press as insiders weigh whether the dinner should continue as it has without incident for since 1921, over 100 years.
