*T-Boz of the iconic R&B group TLC, is back in the headlines, but this time not for a new song or album or her stomach issues. But, it’s related to food. This time, she’s highlighting an unsettling experience during a recent visit to a Ruth’s Chris Steak House in North Brook Township, North Carolina.
Through a series of candid videos shared on Instagram, T-Boz voiced her concerns about the treatment she and her party received, urging the restaurant chain to reconsider its policies and staff training.
In her Instagram posts from August 31st, T-Boz, whose real name is Tionne Tenese Watkins, candidly discussed her frustrating experience, which began when she and her companions entered the restaurant. Despite traveling all day in comfortable attire — including a casual T-shirt and a black hat — they were met with unwelcoming circumstances immediately upon arrival. To their surprise, the group was not greeted when they entered, and over 20 minutes later, after placing their orders, a manager approached to address an issue concerning T-Boz’s hat, according to Revolt.
The situation escalated when the manager requested that T-Boz remove her hat. She refused and, instead, was informed that the group would have to relocate to the bar area. While she was willing to switch locations, T-Boz pointed out an apparent inconsistency: two Black men seated nearby, also dressed casually, were allowed to remain at their table. Confused and upset, she questioned why her group was not afforded the same treatment, only to learn that the men had also been asked to move.
“I don’t have a problem with rules…but it’s how you do things, too,” T-Boz expressed, highlighting her disappointment not just in the request itself, but in the manner it was communicated to her. She noted that prior to the manager’s intervention, several employees had seen her hat but had not communicated any issues, leaving her feeling singled out.

As her recounting of the experience continued, T-Boz emphasized the uncomfortable atmosphere, stating that it felt like a distinction in treatment between her party and other patrons.
“Everybody’s crew looks like they’re seated in massa’s section,” she remarked in her final video. The 54-year-old entertainer’s words struck a chord, raising questions about racial dynamics and perceptions in high-end dining establishments. T-Boz concluded her videos by expressing concern that the restaurant staff appeared to need more education on how to treat customers fairly and courteously, stating, “It seems like all the employees need a little talking to… ‘cause they ain’t running it right, honey.”
Despite the unfortunate encounter, T-Boz and her party ultimately left the restaurant without dining, with many feeling a sense of racial profiling. This incident has sparked a broader conversation on social media about the need for improved training in customer service, particularly regarding sensitivity and equitable treatment of guests.
The singer’s experience resonates with many who have faced similar situations in public spaces, highlighting the importance of respectful and unbiased service in a culturally diverse society. As T-Boz brings attention to these issues, her voice adds to the ongoing dialogue about race, hospitality, and the vital role that businesses play in fostering inclusive environments for all patrons.
