*Teyana Taylor says she is finally witnessing the vision she set for herself years ago come into focus.
In a new interview with Time, the superstar looked back on a period when she felt uncertain about her place in the music business despite early success. Taylor said she was ready to quit the industry in 2020 after no longer feeling supported. “Everybody told me it was dumb,” she said of her decision to step away. “And I was like, ‘No, I am going to be a great actress. One day, I am going to be a great director.’ ”
She soon began building her acting résumé with roles in “Coming 2 America,” “A Thousand and One” and “White Men Can’t Jump.” Her breakthrough arrived with “One Battle After Another,” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, where she portrayed Perfidia Beverly Hills. The performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, along with recognition from the Golden Globes, SAG-AFTRA and BAFTA.

Reflecting on awards season, Taylor said, “Even if I go home empty-handed, I have won.”
She added, “We’re young, we’re blessed, we’re being celebrated — this is the time to be happy and to have fun with it, especially in a space that some people take so serious, and some people are cold, some people are robotic.”
In 2025, Taylor returned to music with “Escape Room,” which earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album. Explaining her comeback, she previously shared, “I think what lured me back was just me coming back on my terms,” adding that she wanted to feel “appreciated” and not confined creatively.
Looking ahead, Taylor plans to tour in late summer 2026 and will make her feature-length directorial debut with “Get Lite,” set for theatrical release on April 9, 2027.
“I would love the EGOT,” she said. “And if I don’t get that Tony, guess what that T is gonna stand for? Teyana.”
