*Airport security requires travelers to separate certain belongings for screening, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your phone needs to be sitting alone in a TSA bin.
Phones, wallets, cameras and other small valuables can be easy to overlook or grab when they’re separated from their owners. The rush to collect shoes, bags and other belongings after screening can also make it easier to leave something behind.
Whenever screening rules allow it, travelers should keep phones and other small electronics inside a zippered compartment of a carry-on or personal bag rather than placing them loose in a bin. According to Travel and Leisure, the Transportation Security Administration says small electronics, including cell phones, can remain inside carry-on bags during screening.
If travelers must remove an item, they should limit how long their valuables sit unattended. They can load less valuable belongings into the first bin, place a carry-on in another, and put electronics and other valuables in the last bin.

If security pulls a bag aside, travelers can request that staff bring their remaining items to the inspection area so everything stays in view. They should also note every bin they use and stay at the checkpoint until they verify that all valuables are accounted for.
Finally, tracking technology can help if something does go missing. Apple users can use Find My to locate compatible devices, while AirTags can help track items such as wallets.
If a phone or other belonging disappears at a TSA checkpoint, report it to airport personnel or TSA as soon as possible and file a lost-item claim when appropriate.
