*“Basketball Wives” alum CeCe Gutierrez shared what looked like a straightforward celebration of friends and philanthropy from the Harold & Carole Pump Foundation’s 26th Anniversary Celebrity Dinner — and some commenters promptly turned the group photo into a debate about Black men, interracial relationships and Black women.
“Another Year at The Harold & Carole Pump Foundation! A great cause and such a great time with good friends!” Gutierrez wrote with photos from the Aug. 20 gathering at the Beverly Hilton.
But the charitable cause wasn’t what caught everyone’s attention.
The Comments Went Somewhere Else
As first reported by The Jasmine Brand, several social media users zeroed in on Black men pictured alongside non-Black partners.
“Lord please protect the black women,” one commenter wrote. “Black Queens forever!!!” another declared.

Another asked, “If they had no money or fame, would you be with them? Asking for a friend…”
And then came a comment guaranteed to send people searching for context: “Once again, Katt Williams was right.”
The outlet reported that several users even said the picture prompted them to unfollow Gutierrez.
Not everybody saw a problem. One commenter pushed back on the criticism, saying, “I know what this post is trying to say but I see happiness, otherwise they wouldn’t be there.” Others questioned why the race of someone’s partner should matter in the first place.
What Was Actually Happening That Night
Here’s what makes the reaction particularly interesting: EURweb was covering the same Pump Foundation event.
While social media eventually debated the racial makeup of relationships represented in a group photo, the gala itself was raising money for cancer care and research. The 26th anniversary Celebrity Dinner ultimately raised more than $3.3 million, according to additional reporting on the event.
Los Angeles Dodgers players Mookie Betts, Enrique Hernández, Teoscar Hernández, Andy Pages, Miguel Rojas and Will Smith, along with manager Dave Roberts, were among those honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Actor Anthony Anderson was also honored.
Magic Johnson was among the celebrity guests and speakers, while Doug E. Fresh performed.
The Harold & Carole Pump Foundation was created by brothers Dana and David Pump in memory of their parents, who died from cancer. The organization has raised millions for cancer treatment, programs and services.
So, yes, there was quite a bit happening beyond who arrived with whom.
CeCe and Byron Scott Have Their Own History
One relationship in the conversation isn’t a mystery.
Gutierrez is married to former NBA player and coach Byron Scott. EURweb covered their engagement in 2018 after the couple announced the news on Instagram.
Two years later, EURweb reported that Scott and Gutierrez married in a 2020 ceremony streamed online for family and close friends.
Their relationship had already been familiar to viewers of “Basketball Wives,” where Gutierrez’s relationship with Scott became part of the show’s family drama.
That history also underscores an important distinction in the latest controversy: the group picture inspired a discussion about Black men dating and marrying outside their race, but a photograph alone doesn’t establish the relationship status of every person standing beside someone else.
One Photo, a Much Bigger Conversation
Still, the reactions documented under Gutierrez’s post show how quickly celebrity images can become proxies for much larger cultural arguments.
The picture wasn’t posted as a statement about interracial dating. It wasn’t accompanied by commentary about Black men, Black women or racial loyalty. Gutierrez was celebrating a charity event and “good friends.”
The audience supplied the rest.
And perhaps that’s what makes the response more revealing than the photograph itself. On a night when celebrities, athletes and community leaders helped generate more than $3 million for a charitable cause, one image was enough to redirect part of the conversation toward an entirely different question: Who should Black men love — and why are strangers so invested in the answer?
