*A simple prayer marked the turning point for Mary J. Blige.
On the “IMO” podcast with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, the R&B superstar recalled asking, “Lord, show me myself.” That request, she said, opened her eyes to patterns she had ignored for years.
“I used to get upset and curse everybody out because things weren’t working,” she said, AllHipHop reports. “And it wasn’t their fault. It was my fault.”
Blige said a shift in perspective during the “No More Drama” period taught her to look inward. That honesty arrived after she began absorbing messages from television pastors. Their repeated warnings about pride and arrogance prompted her to examine her own attitude.

“It’s the spiritual side of things,” Blige explained. “And I started listening to a lot of, like, TV pastors and people that had information, and pride and arrogance and all that stuff. A proud and haughty person won’t go further than this, you know? So it was a lot, I was getting a lot of information that caused me to pause and look at myself.”
The decisive moment came through a straightforward prayer. “I think I prayed the prayer, ‘Lord, show me myself.’ You know, and I still pray that prayer. I got to see me,” she added. What she saw was a pattern of disrespect toward those trying to help her. In response, she contacted every person who had worked on the album and offered direct apologies.
“And so I realized that I was being prideful and disrespectful to people and just different things that made me be like, ‘Pump the brakes. I’m doing something wrong here. And I need to speak to people. I need to apologize to these people for my mistakes,'” she said.
During this time of reflection, she also acknowledged that she lacked knowledge about the business side of the music industry and recognized that others had taken advantage of that gap.
“I don’t want to start labeling things, but everybody was looking out for themselves, and they were benefiting off of the fact that I was unaware,” Blige said, according to Fox Business. “And that happened for a long time. So, when I woke up and realized, you know, Mary, you have to get educated. You have to stay on your business.”
Blige then set out to learn the financial realities of the industry. The change, she noted, continues. The same prayer remains part of her routine, serving as a reminder to stay accountable and informed.
