*An arrest has been made in the 2021 acid attack that left a Hofstra University student with lasting physical and emotional scars.
ABC 7 reports that Nassau County authorities announced that a suspect has been charged in connection with the assault on Nafiah Ikram, who was attacked outside her home in Elmont, New York. On March 17, 2021, Ikram, then 21, was approached from behind in her driveway by a hooded individual who threw acid in her face before fleeing in a vehicle. She sustained severe facial injuries and continues to experience impaired vision.
Prosecutors have charged 29-year-old Terrell Campbell with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and unlawfully possessing noxious material.

Campbell pleaded not guilty during his arraignment and was ordered held without bail. According to District Attorney Anne Donnelly, investigators were able to identify Campbell after receiving a tip and linking him to a red Nissan Altima seen near the scene. She said authorities examined his online activity shortly after the attack.
“We reviewed Campbell’s Internet search history in the minutes following the 2021 attack, we found searches asking, ‘how do I remove sulfuric acid from my car’s fabric?'” Donnelly said. “And two years after he ambushed Nafiah and left her screaming in pain on her front lawn, he actually produced and uploaded a music video to YouTube, boasting about throwing acid in a woman’s face, as unbelievable as it may seem.”
Ikram was present in court as the charges were announced. Reflecting on the arrest, she said, “I’m glad in the sense that even though this is the beginning of a different chapter in my life, I’m glad that I’ve closed the chapter on the uncertainty and the safety and looking over my shoulder.”
Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder declined to disclose details about the tipster but confirmed that a $50,000 reward will be awarded. Prosecutors have not identified a motive, and Donnelly said it is “still being investigated.” Ikram added, “At the end of it, something still doesn’t make sense.”
