*A Tennessee woman is accused of abandoning her 2-year-old son in a grocery store and later assaulting him in front of customers after an announcement revealed the child had been found alone.
According to Law & Crime, the incident took place last week at a Cash Savers discount grocery store in Covington. “The manager indicated a child was left at the service desk of the store,” the Covington Police said. “Employees broadcasted over the store’s intercom system of a toddler being alone at the service desk. Approximately ten minutes after the broadcast, a female approached the service desk and stated, ‘You know I’m going to beat your a—, right?’ to the toddler.”
Police identified 25-year-old Lashona Johnson as the woman who struck her son multiple times in front of witnesses. Investigators state that she aggressively pulled the toddler from the service desk and dragged him to the center of the checkout line before hitting him on the back and leaving the store. Surveillance footage captured the disturbing scene.

“Detectives reviewed and collected the video surveillance which confirmed the witnesses’ statements,” police said. The Department of Children Services (DCS) was called to assist in the investigation and ensure the child’s safety.
“Johnson was interviewed … and she admitted she was the female in the video,” authorities added. The toddler was released to his father as DCS continued its investigation.
Johnson was arrested the same day and booked into the Tipton County Jail on charges of child abuse and neglect. Her bond was set at $50,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court this week.
Covington Police Chief Donna Turner commended those who came forward. “I am so thankful that a citizen and the witnesses reported this incident. It is a troubling video to watch. It was absolutely the right call to say something and report the incident,” she said.
“Our efforts provided a way to check on the welfare of the child, provide any services needed in this family through DCS, and to help prevent this from happening again,” Turner added.
