*ESPN analyst and media personality Stephen A. Smith continues to stir speculation about a possible leap into politics, though he insists his main goal is to spark action within the Democratic Party.
In a recent interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity, Smith shared his growing frustration with the state of political leadership, particularly on the left, The Hill reports.
“I hope somebody from the Democratic Party steps up. I hope I light a fire under them and get a more qualified individual in this mix, so people can stop asking me this stuff and I can enjoy my life,” Smith told Hannity. He added, “But if it continues to get worse, all hands on deck, all of us should consider running, for crying out loud, rather than dealing with this nonsense.”
Smith has long expressed interest in politics and has been openly critical of the Democratic Party following the 2023 election cycle. Earlier this month, he fanned the flames of presidential speculation on social media, posting, “Time to stop messing around. Life is great. Especially at ESPN/Disney. Hate the thought of being a politician. But sick of this mess. So I’m officially leaving all doors open.”
On NBC’s “The Tonight Show” in March, Smith addressed the chatter about a possible campaign. “Folks are nuts, number one,” he joked. “Number two, the Democrat Party, they lost. They had a bad few months. … There’s no real national voice. Enter moi. They’ve come to me.”
However, during a separate appearance on SiriusXM’s Karen Hunter Is Awesome! podcast, Smith appeared to downplay the idea. “You know, I’m laughing like, are y’all serious? … It’s fun, it’s hilarious to me,” he said, though he agreed with Hunter’s point that the country’s current political state is no laughing matter.
