*Bikini Bottom’s beloved sponge is diving back into theaters this December with “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants,” the fourth theatrical installment in the iconic franchise. Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies released the official trailer today, teasing an action-packed undersea journey full of laughs, ghosts, and familiar faces.
Set for release on December 19, 2025, the film follows SpongeBob on his boldest adventure yet. Eager to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob sets sail after the ghostly pirate, the Flying Dutchman. His quest takes him to the darkest depths of the ocean—places no sponge has dared to go.
The film is directed by longtime “SpongeBob” collaborator Derek Drymon and features a story by Marc Ceccarelli, Kaz, and Pam Brady, with a screenplay by Brady and Matt Lieberman. The voice cast includes returning fan favorites Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, and Mr. Lawrence. New additions to the ensemble include George Lopez, Isis “Ice Spice” Gaston, Arturo Castro, Sherry Cola, Regina Hall, and Mark Hamill, who takes over the role of the Flying Dutchman—originally voiced in the series by Brian Doyle-Murray.
“Search for SquarePants” has been in development since early 2022, with Drymon officially coming aboard as director in April 2023. In July 2024, Hamill revealed his involvement, building excitement among longtime fans. The film’s music is composed by John Debney, who also scored “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.”

With its signature blend of humor, heart, and high-seas hijinks, “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants” promises a can’t-miss experience for fans of all ages.
The film will be released exclusively in theaters on December 19, 2025. Watch the trailer above to catch a glimpse of SpongeBob’s latest epic adventure.
